March 2003
Nisku, AB – PCL Industrial Constructors, a leading fabricator of natural gas and process piping, commissioned a Vernon Abrasive Saw to augment production from their flame-cutting machines. Sustained by a 5-year backlog of construction projects, PCL will dedicate this machine to straight cutting and beveling pipe spools of carbon & stainless steel and high chrome alloy materials.
Machine delivery was integrated with expansion plans to the Nisku facility. Priority was given to safe and rapid transfer of pipe throughout the shop using pipe conveyors instead of overhead cranes. Parallel cutting lines facilitate loading and sorting operations to downstream fit-up and welding stations.
Diameters from 1”-24” O.D. are straight cut using an abrasive blade. A reversible grinding wheel produces both knife-edge and bevel & land end preparations. Pneumatic hold-down rollers secure the pipe as it rotates on a bed of turning rolls. Production speeds rival plasma cutting and the uncontaminated, machine-like surface finish eliminates virtually all clean-up. |
